She was named after Tippi Hedren, the actress who starred in Hitchcok’s ‘The Birds’. She has even been labelled as the “Real Life Mowgli”.
Tippi was born to Alain Degré and Sylvie Robert who worked as wildlife photographers in Namibia. During their stay at Namibia, Tippi befriended many wild animals, including a 28-year old elephant Abu, a leopard nicknamed J&B, crocodiles, lion cubs, giraffes, a Northern Greater Galago, a Banded Mongoose, an Ostrich, meerkats, a baby zebra, a cheetah, a Caracal, a snake, an African Grey Parrot, giant bullfrogs and chameleons. She also befriended the Bushmen and the people belonging to the Himba tribe. They taught her how to survive on roots and berries and to speak their language
Tippi later moved with her mother to France. A book describing her adventurous life called TIPPI MY BOOK OF AFRICA was later published and translated in different languages. My Book of Africa is a bestselling novel of Tippi’s adventurous life in Namibia. She even set up a website and made a visit to Africa to film six nature documentaries for the Discovery Channel.
